    Seahorse Babies

Very cool. I've successfully raised seahorses myself, but it is not easy, particularly after the first week or so. I strongly suggest that once they can take anything larger than newly hatched brineshrimp you start feeding them brine shrimp that are several days old and have been fed LIVE...

    High Alk Question

    >Is a 14dkh (higher than freshly mixed salt) even possible? < Yes, but it depends upon the pH and the calcium and magnesium levels. If the pH is too high with high alk then calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate will precipitate directly out of the water and make the water milky (don't ask...

    The struggle continues….

Interesting, I looked though the ICP results, I've never run ICP on a sample from my tank. Everything looks pretty good except the trace elements, but I'm not sure I'd read too much into that as it's difficult to get meaningful numbers from tests when you get into those low ranges. Still, you...

What does everyone feed their corals?

Generally I feed just light. For some corals (like certain LPS) that clearly can capture food once in a while I'll feed some chopped up meaty food (clams, shrimp, mysis shrimp, etc.).

    The struggle continues….

Not sure I completely understand. From the photos it looks like you have hard corals, or SPS encrusting onto the bottom glass of the tank. You also have a lot of frags in your rack that look okay. Is there just the rare frag that does not do well? I'd actually probably keep my alk a little...

Tank recommendations for new reef build

I just picked up a ~450 gallon tank from Glasscages. It seemed really well made to me. They gave me a tour of their facility in Dickson, TN. They had some REALLY big tanks being made there!

What's the oldest living thing in your tank?

Can't really count the age of corals, but I have had the same pair of gold-bar Maroon clownfish since 1998, might even be earlier than that. That's at least 25 years I believe. They've slowly lost their stripes and now are almost just...well...maroon!

    What will eat hair algae

About once every two years or so I purchase a large number of Astrea snails all at once. In bulk these can be quite inexpensive. These come from the Florida keys. Yes, a number of them die, but compared to the cost of the large snails for me this makes the most sense. Once in a while I will...

How do you keep your tank cool?

I let my tank run up to 83 regularly in the summer. I have an AC unit in the wall of the downstairs sump room. I gave up on chillers - too expansive, and not reliable. Also, the chiller would just dump the heat into the room and it's better to get the heat and humidity directly to the...

    Monster tanks of the group

Mine is almost exactly the same dimensions as Paul's, but about 3 inches higher...which I now kind of regret (my arms are not long enough!). I just ordered a new tank from Glasscages for a house we are building in Indiana. This one will be about 6'8" x 4' x 28 inches. Viewable on two sides...

    Tank glass cleaner

On glass, I use a simple paint scraper from the hardware store. Works very fast and takes off the coraline with no problems. At first I found the blades would rust quickly, but then I learned that all you needed to do after rinsing was apply a very thin layer of cooling oil (wash it off before...

    >UV is important for coral fluorescence and photosynthesis< Not so sure about that. For photosynthesis?

    Transportation of coral

Depending on the size of the corals and how much space you have in your car you might consider putting the corals in a salt bucket (nearly full of water) and running a battery powered air pump to keep the water moving. An extra salt bucket full of saltwater could also be used for a water change...

    SPS Warfare Advice

Usually only the spot where they touch is a problem. I let plenty of SPS touch. On a rare occasion if an infection starts at a touching spot it may move across the coral and the entire colony dies. This is very rare and is more likely a problem with the health of the coral (and potentially...

    Bryopsis

I've never had a problem with long spine urchins eating any significant amount of coral. Sometimes they will scrap it a little bit as they go over, but not real damage.
