Your pH is on the high side as it passes 8.4.
That could be caused by the rocks as well.

What is your alkalinity?

That Alkalinity is low consider the high pH. I saw this many times with those rocks in tanks.

I ran alk above 9 previously but after I got the refugium setup (nitrate, phospate went down to almost 0), i lowered it down because a couple of SPS frags bleached.

Alk at 9 to 10 wont cause sps bleaching.

Not related.
Just some speculation floating around online without scientific basis.

Back to issue at hand. How do I beat this diatom ? Should I just let it run its course?

You may want to remove the real reef rocks.
Those could be the source of your problem. They will keep leaching chemicals for month to come.

Not a possible solution Dong. My tank use 100% of them 80 lbs in total. The problem happened when i added last 5 lbs ordered from a differemt vendor.

It also worth mentioning that this is a pretty new tank (5 months).

If the rock is new it’s going to go through the ugly stages like all new tanks do. I’d try waiting it out for a month and see if it got better. If it doesn’t try removing that new section and cycling it in a another container.

The issue with these man made rock is not cycling. Natural live rocks are coral skeletons, which do not leach chemicals.
Man made rocks, depends on the manufacture process, may leach chemicals.

Good point since i lost a big fish(power brown tang)before all these brown algae pop up. All events happened after added 5 more lbs rock from an online store (initial batch obtained from LFS gave no issues).

The rocks from LFS might be in their tanks for a while which were cured better.

Can overfeeding pellets contribute to this problem?

Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

It could if you see uneaten pellets left behind.

Also many new red acro frags were turning bright green too(red mile turn all green). Perhaps that's another elevated nutrient level indicator too.

What type of light are you running?
