so starting a new project looking for some diy stand ideas let's see what has worked or hasn't
 
Depends upon the look your going for. Simple 2 x 4, 2 x 4 with skinned sides, plywood like a real cabinet., extruded aluminum, steel, etc.

If you want cheap.... 2x4 wood.

If you want expensive, use 80/20 Inc's aluminum extrusions.

Benefits of Alu: smaller space taken up. You can accurately do strength and deflection calculations because you know the material properties accurately (unlike wood). Will not absorb moisture and twist/swell/etc. Expect to pay $2k for a 6ft tank's worth if you include something to hold lights.
