One canister filter for two tanks

Is hooking up one canister filter two tanks possible even if it was freshwater fish is it possible

No not easily. I suppose one could connect the tanks via bulkheads or something.

Or if 1 tank drained into the other.

But you can't split the intake and returns on the canister and run them to the 2 tanks
 
I did it for years with the 2 tanks connected by one of those U shaped acrylic tubes used in overflow chambers.
The Display tank was 90G and beside that one I had a 20G as a fuge full of Macro and other corals. So it was good to display too.

The pump was taking water from the 20 and sending it back to the 90.

Before adding the 20 I was using the canister only. Then I used it as described.

Tube was with a net at both entrance to avoid snails.

If pump stopped, water level in both tanks was the same. So no overflows.
