When is the best time to start a refugium in a new tank ? Should i run a sock ,skimmer, and have a refuigum or is that to much ?

Depends on what you want to do and if you want to run any specific method (triton, zeovit etc) as some of them have different requirements. But there is nothing wrong with doing a filter sock, skimmer and refugium they as they all tackle nutrient export differently. Only thing with filter socks is you have to keep up on the maintenance and clean them regularly otherwise they could do more harm than good...

Agreed on the filter socks. I don’t use them because they’re too much maintenance.
test your NO4 and PO4. A new tank, Idon’t think it’s very high.
I love the idea of refugium for biological filtration and skimmer for mechanical filtration. It just sounds so right. However, in my years of reefing, I’ve never successfully kept chaeto alive for longer than 3 months. It always crumble and disappear.
I always have a refugium though. Like I said, it just sounds so right. So I do it.
