In line cleaning pump

I’m trying to come up with an easier way to do large water changes and sand cleanings. The tanks are a 60 and a 40 and are in the basement, with no sink on that floor. Every time I do a large change it’s five gallons pails up the stairs to the kitchen sink. I have the new saltwater plumbed in from storage on the other side of the basement so no buckets to deal with there.

I think I want to find an inline “return” pump that I can take the suction side, add a hose, and remove water or hookup the sand cleaner and have the other side go right to my drain stack. The farthest tank is about 20 feet from the stack and the wye is about five feet off the floor.

If you’ve tried this before what sort of pump did you use? I don’t really want to pay the reef tax for a name pump but I also want something relatively tough. An adjustable speed might be nice too for sand cleaning so I don’t suck too much sand into the pump.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Could you siphon into a wheeled brute garbage can, then wheel it over to the stack and pump the bin out with a submersible utility pump? They’re relatively cheap from Amazon or Home Depot so no need for any expensive controllable option.

do you have floor clean out down there?

Nope. I used to dump into washer in the past, but if you don’t rinse it quickly you’ll get rust spots on your clothes the next wash. Wife=not happy

I was looking at the 33 series pumps from Seaflo. They come in 115v, with a 6 foot suction height. They also have a built in pressure switch and backflow valve. I’m just not sure how it feels about sand.

something like this would work

If you dumped into the washer before then you certainly have options. How does the washer empty? I’m assuming there is some type of drain plumbing down there?

It drains up to the stack, about five from floor level. Im using a sump pump setup like @Cpage101 suggested above for now. I haven’t given up on the idea, I know I can get it somehow. I’m waiting for that “aha” moment to strike.

I dont know how everything is lay out in your basement or if u have any obstruction but u could consider running a drain pipe from the tank to the wye at an angle like all the other drain pipes into the drain stack. All your waste water now just need to be pump 5+ feet up to empty or discard.

What about a laundry sink with built in pump. Then you could do everything in your basement including water parameter testing. Your significant other might like the convenience too!

They are relatively cheap and easy to plump into your wye.

That’s what I have in my basement. Works great and I run everything right into it including my auto water changes and when I make water. Never had an issue
