Interesting little article.. Martin Moe spoke about this year's ago at MACNA (2010?).

Similar articles on the same. The issue was ballast water from vessels through the Panama Canal bridges two oceans and brought many diseases to Caribbean reefs. This scpecofically hurt the urchin population. Essentially removing all grazing species of fish and urchins to let algae overtake the Caribbean. these were already impacted by overfishing and poorly managed fishing. the two articles are sufficiently clear on the issue. It’s hard for me to even imagine that the Caribbean was once full of stony coral like the other amazing oceans.
