Flukes

My fish in QT now have flukes...4 weeks in to QT and now this. Yes, this is why you QT. But now what?

I guess I have to start dropping salinity down to 1.009. I was just keeping it at 1.020 (what they water was at from the store). But now I have to start hypo.

Anything else I should do for flukes?

argh...thanks.

10-20 minute bath in potassium permanganate. Get ready for it. You need new water ready right away. This stuff stains everything in sight. Follow directions. I seem to remember it was like 40 mg per gallon or something.

Feed them food soaked in garlic too.

Garlic won't do anything at all for flukes. All you have to do is a 2 or 3 minute fw dip, don't put them thru hyposalinity, the fw dip is an immediate cure.

Well, my wrasse is dead. It died while I was prepping the FW dip. WTF??? I had him in a specimin container. One minute ok, next, dead.

I'm really upset at the moment. I will FW dip the remaining fish. Hopefully they make it. I've got one fish not eating and showing signs of a secondary infection (bloody streaks at the base of the tail). I'm afraid to FW dip that one...it will propbably not make it. But I see a couple of flukes on her, too.

What a crappy night.

Thanks Jeremy, I'll leave the salinity level alone.

Dayum....sorry.. if it's that far along, their gills and such may be swiss cheese by now. Again...sorry.

Really? I thought it bothered internal worms? I guess not, thanks for correcting me.

Well, they all got a 2 minute dip. (it just seems so mean) The wrasse was the one who had lots on him (perhaps the starter?). Only one or two on the others, so hopefully it's in time.

The one that's looking ragged is the one I don't expect to make it. Before discovering the flukes tonight, I was about to treat the tank with Furan 2 (for the one with the hemmoraging).

If she's still hanging on in the morning, I'll start the Furan treatment. I didn't want to add that to the mix tonight. They're all mad at me hiding in the rocks. I hope they're all waiting for breakfast in the morning.

Man...I've never even seen flukes before. Now that I know what to look for, I hope I can spot it earlier.

PS: I had been soaking their food in garlic and vitachem.

Poor things! Sorry to hear that :(

What a bummer. Kudos for quarantining. Can you share more about how you came to the diagnosis? Were they visible? Did they drop off after treatment? The only flukes I have seen are blood, liver, and lung flukes (in humans) and I can't find much on the web other than a possible genus for marine fish: Benedenia (most are pretty tiny).

I had the wrasse in the specimin container. Was literally going to start acclimating him for the new 180g (which is empty- he would have been the first/only fish for a while).

Once I saw him under the bright MH light I saw "things" on him. They looked like clear flatworms. They were on his head, sides, etc. I'm certain they were in his gills too because he died shortly after - too much stress I imagine.

So all of the inhabitants of the QT got a FWD tonight. I'm going to order some medication for this (prazipro sp?).

On a side note, I guess keeping the lighting dim to reduce stress in the QT was not a good idea. I would have spotted these sooner. But we just used ambient and room lighting for that tank.

Prazipro does work very well in QT.

I usually spot the flukes on eyes first, the eye will look cloudy. In a fw dip, the flukes will turn whitish and start crawling off/falling off the body and you would be amazed how many can come off of one fish. I see alot of flukes coming out of wholesalers, but very rarely see people have fluke problems in reef tanks, so I'm not sure if skimmer, corals, etc somehow filter them out.

Unfortunately the sick anthia didn't make it. She was alive at 1am and gone at 6:30.

Since she obviously had a secondary infection I will continue with the Furan2 treatment. Once that is complete, they will be treated with Prazipro. After that, if I have any fish left  , they'll move to the 180.

I was about to order the prazipro, and more Furan 2 (to restock) and this made me wonder what other necessities for QT I should have on hand. Anything else that I should have in the fishie medicine cabinet?

Wow, Lisa. This sucks.. Sorry to hear about the fish. :(

Sorry I can't be more help, the most I've had to deal with is Ich.

For what it's worth.....

I use a NO flourescent 10 gallon hood light on our 30 gallon quarantine. It's dirt cheap, not overly bright, but bright enough to spot ich and other stuff. We've got a hippo in there now, and as soon as I turn on the light, he comes out of hiding and looking for chow. :D
