How to clean old RO/DI units

I was wondering what people use to clean the insides of their rodi units? I had 2 floods when i lived on a river and had to sell my house to the govt like 10 years ago. MY ro/di has moved around, sat, moved, sat. I pulled it all apart and it had the black/reddish stains. I used bleach and water and it really didn't do anything? I've got a new membrane and filters and was wondering if it's even "cleanable" for clean water. Any thoughts?

Are you talking about the clear canister holders or the actual hardware parts where the filters and holders screw into as being that color?

it has one clear and 2 solid cannisters. them and the inside of where they screw into.
