how do you tell if your clowns are paired? i bought a false purcula at petco which is about 1 inch big and just recently bought a 3/4 inch purcula (don't think tank raised) from exotic in everette. They kind of hang around eachother some times but dont follow with each other all the time.

when one clown becomes dominant you will see shaking behavior that looks like the fish is having a seizure.

My percs are rarely more than 2 inches apart........and they do the shaky breaky heart with each other a lot too. :D

its at 65 hancock street. its a good place.

well the bigger clown does seem to chase the smaller one a little and almost nip at it, but quickly stops. there close some of the time. Another question i have is can a tank raised one from petco and a wild one pair up and have offspring? what about oscellarius' and percula's?

Shouldn't be any problem with them being different types. The eggs are a challenge to raise, but it is a fun project with some dedication. The babies can't survive on their own in our tanks.

Pairing clowns can have some challenges. Sometimes the individuals just don't click and there is fighting, but it sounds like you have a good start. Good luck with them.

my clowns were the same size and one did the shakey dance. does size really matter?

In most clown species the largest one becomes the female. When you have two of the same size they can have a harder time deciding who will be dominant and who will submit and can fight to the death over it. With large clowns there also can be a risk of them being two females. Since the path from juvi to male to female is one way, two females can't work things out and one will be killed.

If yours are acting like they want to be a pair, expect the dominant one to start growing much faster than the male.

i wouldn't imagine that you would have any issues. percs or false percs are both peaceful clowns, and both of the ones you have are small. you might see a little aggression for a week or so, but it should subside. if they are already starting to swim together, that is a really good sign.

another question i have is which anenome should i get for the clowns. i was thinkin of a pink tip hatian but will any anenome do?
