Salt per gallon?

Hi everyone,

I'm about to start adding salt to my tank water. I have a 50g cube and have Instant Ocean sea salt.

How much salt should I add per gallon? Is there anything special I need to do or can I just dump each cup of salt in?

Usually 1/2 cup of salt for every gallon will be a good start, let it mix (very) well, then add if needed. 1 cup at a time is fine. Try to mark your water container and salt container so each time the mix will be the same.

I have a Domino's Pizza cup that I use(I don't know if it equate to a real cup or not) for every 4 gallons of water. I use IO salt and it usually close to 1.025 SG.
You need to use a refractometer and dedicate a cup or something to measure the salt. After a couple of times, you'll get it almost spot on. This will also tell you if your refractometer need a calibration or the new salt batch is off when you don't get the SG you're expecting.

Thanks fellas! Started adding to the water. I'll be using my refractometer to check it
