Seahorses in a reef

billm

oops!
I know this subject came up recently.tfh (tropical fish hobbyist)magazines jan and feb issues had articles on this subject. While seahorses don't interest me very much,it was good reading.

I need to get the mag just to read the article. Are they indeed saying it is okay to keep a seahorse in a reef-like environment?

Yup! Just read it, not saying I agree. I have it if anybody wants to read it, I can bring it to the meeting to give to someone.

Also said fish like, Bangai Cardinals were good tank mates.

Who wrote it?

Not that it would change my opinion. Lots of damage control coming up... I'm going to buy it this weekend so I can see what I'm dealing with.

"A Seahorse Reef," by Pete Giwojna

This is edition 2

"Edition 1 says he explained making a tailor made reef for seahorses, which corals were seahorse safe, which must be used with caution, and which inverts not to use."

I did not read that edition

It is a two part article in the jan/feb edition the authors name is Pete Giwojna
darn I type slow

Oh, I have January I am going to check it out. I missed it last time.

So again, I have both of these for anyone that wants to borrow at the meeting.

January

This one was the February edition. I usually do not even read these but this interests me.

Oh, I get it.... thanks. I'll have to give it a read.... I can tell ya right now I don't agree with many of the basic points from what it sounds like.

And from you pics. and experience with them and also what Greg told me about Seahorses I agree but that is why this hobby can be so interesting.

If we went back 20 years and told people some of the stuff we keep in our tanks they would say it is impossible.

I'm not trying to stand in the way of "progress". But it's sad to see the parade of sick seahorses that swim in front of my eyes on another site. Heat is one of the main factors. We really try to move peeps away from that type environment.

Agreed. He mentioned that and mentioned a species that would do ok in warm water but I don't know much about them just learning for the future. Want me to look up what he said?

This type of tank is possible. The Elos seahorse tank set up at AG is a perfect example. It has some live rock, corals, sea grass and other things in it. You have to know what you are doing and get compatible species.

Ok few previews, "'tiger-tail seahorses.....excellent choice for a tank with SPS

"The Brazillian Seahorse H. reidi is well suited to a warm-water tank.

"The melanististic form of H. ingens...is accustomed to equatorial heat and is a good choice for reef systems with temps. in the 78 to 82 F range."

*sigh*

Thanks.

Keeping temps low is the one point we've been trying to drive home with peeps wanting to try seahorses. I consider this two steps backwards.

Really.....I am let down that such a magazine that is well known would have material like this that alot of people are going to take as good as gold.
