Donations of Livestock (and equipment) for Annual Auction - Sunday Oct 22nd. ? and Friendly Competition
Okay, now's your chance to give back a little bit to the club that has made it possible for the mad frag swapping mayhem that occurs at nearly every monthly meeting. We are trying to raise funds that will primarily be used for bringing in world-renowned speakers to our monthly meetings next year. We already have two speakers scheduled, including in Feb. the man who wrote the book?actually a bunch of books on the identification of nearly all hard corals on the planet, author Dr. JEN (Charlie) Veron. We are hoping for a line up of many other excellent speakers in the hobby, but it will depend to an extent on you, as bringing in speakers can be expensive.
We are asking members for donations of livestock: corals, inverts, fish, etc. that can be used for the annual auction. We are of course looking for items that will go for good $ at the auction. This means that unusual, unique, or rare items would be particularly appreciated. While we will take most anything, please do not donate specimens that are in poor health, or that might have parasitic infections. We are only looking for items that can be kept in tropical saltwater aquariums (74-83 F). Also, remember that the auction takes a considerable amount of time, with each item that comes up increasing the length of the auction; so it's advantageous for the auction if we don?t have huge numbers of the same item that might not go for much. We are also accepting donations of equipment, but please limit it to equipment in reasonable working order, and attempt to provide details about its current working state (old bulbs, ballast works...needs new pump, etc.).
For those of you that are donating it is very important that we have a decent quality photo of the actual item that will be auctioned, preferably under favorable conditions, in your tank. Having a photo of the mother colony (in case of coral fragments) would also be of much value. If you do not have a digital camera, or have no means of getting a photo onto a digital medium please let us know. We will likely have volunteers that are willing to come over and snap the shots for you.
If you are coming to the auction you can bring the items with you. Please bag them carefully, and use plenty of water; remember you are not worried about shipping weight, since they will be hand carried to and from the auction. Keep them warm, in an insulated container until they come up for bidding. You can use separate bags of warm tap water in the insulated container to help keep the temp up (refill in the hotel if necessary). Pack them as if they were going to be bagged for 4-6 hours, which they may be. You can use standard Ziploc bags, or if you need really large bags, let us know, we can probably get some to you. A clean salt bucket for really large items is also not out of the question. If you have large fish, you might need to keep them in a bucket with a battery powered air bubbler. Keep in mind that large fish might be difficult to find homes for, particularly if they are not 'reef-safe'.
If you are not coming to the auction or will be late, but would still like to donate, please let us know. We will have someone come to your location and pick up the items, either the day of the auction, or a day or two beforehand. It is important for us to organize the auction as much as possible though, so if you are planning to donate, please try and let us know ahead of time.
Please email your photos and detailed descriptions of the items (include care instructions if possible, eg.: reef safe fish, fish for fish only tank, will eat zoanthids, loves 400 W, 10K metal halide light and high water flow?.or does well under VHO, etc., etc.). Email the photos and descriptions to both robbot514 [at] gmail.com and brsauction [at] gmail.com. If you would like to take the donation as a tax write off you can use the form at http://www.bostonreefers.org/about/financials/receipt.pdf. Please be sure to include your full name (and screen name if you wish) so we know who donated and who to thank.
A week or so before the auction we will publish a list of all the items that will be up for auction, with photos, and detailed descriptions. This will also of course include dry goods, equipment, etc. We will update the list and add items that come in as we get closer to the date of the auction.
There will also be a contest of sorts. The BRS member donating the single item with the highest dollar value gained at auction, and also, the BRS member donating the highest total value of items ($ gained at auction) will each receive a two-year extension to their BRS membership, a BRS T-shirt, cap, and coffee mug. Cool!
Let the competition begin. Please give to the club that helps supports your hobby.
