Mag Drive 9.5 Return Pump

How high up does it have to pump? Or, how long is your return line plumbing?

The higher the pump has to push water, the more water pressure you lose. So if a pump can move 500gph, but it is going up several feet, you're getting significantly less than that in actual practice. Obviously going up from a basement sump is quite a lot more loss than coming a few feet from right in the stand.

A bunch of 45-90° angles in the return plumbing also affects how hard the return pump has to work - I think a 90° angle in the plumbing is equivalent to another foot of height.

I used to run a mag 9.5 on my 40b. the pump was located in the sump directly under the tank and was too much flow for my single drain. The pump was always throttled between 1/2 or 3/4 via the shutoff valve. i now run a controllable DC pump, much easier.
