I've done about as much research as I can on the topic and have decided to give it a shot.
My QT tank has been empty for a few weeks and I kinda let it get out of hand as far as upkeep, and it's got some algae, pods, and dirty water. This is the water I am going to use to start the farm. I will seed the pod population via the air sponge from the QT.
When I bought my tank/stand, I was given a 5 gallon tank to be used for a possible ATO reservoir. I haven't used it, and plan a larger reservoir, so this is a perfect candidate.
The tank will be kept under my stand next to my sump. The stand is pretty enclosed to help retain heat, so there will be no heater.
I have a clip-on work lamp I had on my sump previously, so not only is this just a light, it's another heat source, so I'm really not worried about a heater.
I will feed this tank phyto, as well as crushed flake. Probably do the crushed flake 2x a week and the phyto every day to start and taper down to every other day.
I am picking up an air stone and air pump from a friend this weekend, so we should be able to get the gas exchange going fairly well.
I will be using no lid, and topping off with treated tap water. I will keep roughly 3 gallons of water in the tank to try and keep the salt creep to a minimum.
Pics to come!
