purple firefish question

I just picked up a purple firefish today on an impulse buy, an now I'm doing a little more research and it says lid required. Anyone have any luck having these fish in a tank with no lid ? or am I doomed and I should return them?

You might get lucky for a while, but generally it isn't too long before firefish jump. Especially in a busy tank or with spicy tankmates.

I have two red fire fishes and one purple one. I red one jumped out but the other two were ok

Fish can jump when spooked. The newer mesh lid kits with the floating corner supports look pretty decent.
