Aquaclear BioMax

I bought an Aquaclear 70, turned it into a fuge for my 3 gallon JBJ Picotope.

Is the "BioMax" material just suppose to be surface area for nitrate/nitrite bacteria to grow on?

I threw it in my 1g refuge on my Biocube, but Im wondering now, will I ever pull it out, and if I do will it cause a spike?

Its a porous material upon which bacteria is supposed to grow. It will also trap crap and, if not cleaned regularly, farm up some nitrates for you (potentially).

i have an aquaclear 50 in my freshwater tank and have come to notice that even a slow runing tap will wash all the color right out of the biomax and the color im sure is the bacteria so i have found that when i clean my filter if i use the water i have removed for a water change to clean the bio max it wont harm the tank by forcing it to re cycle and the other two layers i just clean with tap water and add them back into the filter when im done but i find that aqua clear filters do a really good job you made a good choice
