UV Sterilizer Question

Will a sterilizer kill other things floating in the water column besides algae and bacteria, perhaps Ich protozoa? I'm thinking about getting one, especially since I'll probably be using NSW for at least the initial fill.

it depends on the flow rate past the bulbs, but it is said to be able to kill ich

I have a turbo twist on the return line from my sump. I love it, and have had very few problems in the tank since getting it.
