What is on my leather coral?

I purchased a leather coral years ago at the frag swap. It was the tiniest little frag and as the seller indicated, everybody has had success growing this leather coral. For years this guy has been the center piece of my tank and my clowns have hosted on him (they ignore the multiple BTAs). The coral is now shrinking at least 60% reduction in size. It has a brown spot in the middle top left of the coral? What is this and is it killing my coral? How do I save this leather? Did the clowns lay eggs in the coral? Is this a foreign body I take out? AND do I need to remove this coral as it gonna nuke my tank? I think Greg was the seller of this fabulous piece.

thanks
Neptune!!

Here is a photo with the lights on.... Do you see the black spot to the middle / upper of the leather just off center to the left?

What is that black spot?

Mine did the same
It started like that and when it was hanging by a string I cut it and made a frag , it recovered really well
