is there a minimum distance the sump has to be placed beneath the overflow box?
(or in the extreme could you place the sump just a few inches lower and everything would still work)

I don't believe there is a minimum but all your shut offs and elbows and union joints will defiantly set a minimum for you. i only have about 10 inches between my stand and the top of my sump and let me tell you it was not fun planning and fitting all the pipe.

You probably want to have as much space as you can. You want it to be easy to get into the sun to clean oh, to catch that fish that makes it down there, to clean and remove/ install protein skimmer in, you want it easy to connect and disconnect your return pump
