just wondering how most folks are handling the removal of detritus buildup by way of mechanical filter media. as compared to no media usage.

Occasionally I'll siphon detritus out of my sump, but other than the skimmer, I use no mechanical filtration.

I use the sump as a detrious trap, it just settles in there and then once a month I will siphon it out, no media is used

Other than a couple of experiments (short lived) I haven't used anything except the occasional bag of carbon, for 5-6 yrs.

I siphon where detritis accumulates, and blow the rocks off with a turkey baster frequently.

i'm wondering if there would be some wider variances regarding use and non-use based on fish load. reefs with mostly corals i wouldn't believe would have the excessive need for mechanical removal media.

conversely, systems heavily populated with fish heavily fed may have different mechanical filtration requirements.
