question on how to use a T4 pump

I picked up a used T4 external pump.
once its plumbed, do I have to prime this with seawater before plugging it in?

I am thinking yes, but just want to be sure, I dont have instructions with it or anything.

for that matter, is this one of those pieces of equipment that should never be run dry?
thank you-
mark

You'll want to plumb the pump in a place that will allow it to self-prime, ie, keep the intake of the pump at a lower level than the tank in a way that the water will flow freely (no over-the-back elbows)... if that's not how you have it plumbed, then you'll need to find a way to prime it manually, but it will be a chore... see http://melevsreef.com/closedloop.html for ideas.

I believe the T4 has built-in run-dry protection, but it's best not to run any pump dry IMO.

Thanks Nuno!
I checked out that link....So when I finish my plumbing I need to be sure to leave a way to prime it. I just wont glue the last pieces of pvc.

thank you

hey mark if you dont glue the last pieces of pvc your asking for a problem and leaks. if you have it like nuno says you could just use a powerhead to prime it just put the power head to pump water into it.
