The next BRS meeting will be held at the Framingham Elks Lodge, 450 Union Ave, Framingham, MA. Sept. 27th Saturday from 11-3 PM.

Featured speaker - Tony Vargas, long time hobbyist, author, diver, and photographer. Bio at the bottom of the page.

Tony, recently returning from his diving in Tubbataha in the Philippines will be speaking on the current condition of the reefs in the Philippines, and his observations on how corals live in the wild and how they differ in captivity.

In place of the Novice Reefkeepers lecture this month we will have a question and answer session for any novice reefkeepers. Any questions will be answered by a panel of accomplished aquarists, so bring your questions and please don't be shy. Of particular value would be questions that might not be as easy to answer on the forum.

Tentative schedule for the meeting (this schedule may change, check back to this thread for updates as we get closer to the day of the meeting):

11 AM - 12 PM - Meet and greet

Presentation set up time - new members registration - folks milling about chatting about their tanks - chance to meet and chat with the guest speaker - time to purchase BRS coffee mugs, hats, polo shirts - library book signout and return - turn samples in for water testing - chance to pick up 2008 BRS calenders, etc. More about these club benefits can be read here:

11:30 AM - 12 PM - Novice Reefkeepers question and answer session - topic listed above

12 - 12:15 PM - Announcements - raffle items descriptions - introductions of new members, etc.

12:15 - 1:15 PM - Guest Speaker - Tony Vargas - Tubbataha Reef in the Philippines

1:15 - 3 PM - Pizza - general member to member reef chat, frag swapping meyhem and madness, cleanup

1:45 PM - Raffle drawing

Reminder: we try our best to keep the meeting on time, but there are a lot of things that are out of our control, so the times are subject to change, do not take these times as gospel please. Check back to this thread for updates as we get closer to the day of the meeting.

Tony's Bio:

Mr. Vargas has been an avid aquarist since the age of nine. He started with freshwater fish and invertebrates. His introduction to saltwater began with under gravel filters in the 70's and became a coralholic in the early 80's. Tony was one of the first individuals in North America, to successfully maintain and grow Acropora in the mid to late 80's.

He is a regular contributor to numerous North American publications such as Freshwater and Marine Aquarium with a monthly column called "Feature Coral". Also, a regular contributor in Europe with Marine World and writes articles on reef fish. He has been acknowledge in Carden Wallace book, “Staghorn Corals of the World”, and numerous other publications.

Mr. Vargas is a successful SCUBA diver and an accomplished photographer, with many dives in the Indo-Pacific and the Caribbean. His photos are sought after by many magazines and catalogs across North America. A consultant, and frequent lecturer on corals, reef fish and reef keeping systems.
 
Unique Aquaria will be on hand and have a table at the meeting. Please see their sub-forum for any additional information, or special requests.
 
I can't wait... Still trying to convince the wife to tag along...
 
At noon wsonner will be giving a brief demo on the AccliMate by Reef Gently.

Water testing will be running as usual.
 
My gf just worked the night shift so we'll see if she tags along. If i go early i may just go without her and let her rest. I'm all up for the first meeting table. save a spot for the lady jic :)
 
Plan to sit up front near the bar for the first meeting table. We will have having a novice reefkeepers question and answer session at 11:30.
