SPS PEOPLE

Whatever works for you, there isn't really a beat salt. I use classic instant ocean because the water parameters mix closer to what I want. I know @dz6t uses the same and a lot of others as well. I don't have a pic of my tank growing anything substantial as I've been buying frags the last 6 months. Here's a link to what going on in my tank.

The Monti caps grew from 1" pieces and some of the chunkier acros started from a lot smaller sizes. This is basically my growouts until I'm ready to put them in another tank.

There is really no bad salt out there except Aquaforest, I used it for about a year, quality control was not there. Their customer service was bottom of the barrel.

They caked up quickly. They told me that as long as the salt did not turn blue, it is ok to use the caked up salt. I asked why the salt will turn blue when bad? They said they don’t know.

The parameters are all over the place despite they put the fake certificates inside the buckets.

I’ve been using Fritz pro RPM (blue box) for about a year now in all my tanks. It’s parameters are close to what I keep my tank at, they advertise alk 8.5 calcium 440 mag 1425. I keep my Tank at alk 9 calc 450 magnesium 1450. I mix up about 40 gallons in a 55gal tank every couple weeks. I’ve tested the parameters randomly after waiting 24 hrs mixing and consistently get parameters very close to alk 8.5-8.6 calcium 450-560 and magnesium 1450-1500. I keep SPS and LPS and both look fine and never really noticed a difference when I switched from Red Sea. It cost less, $65 shipped free for 200 gal box from saltwater aquarium.com. It mixes extremely well and dissolves fast leaving no residue.

But salt is just one part of the equation. You find amazing tanks with all sort of salts, as Dong pointed.

Visit the SPS Forum of reef central.

Cheers

If you like the RPM, give Liveaquaria salt a try. They are basically the same thing.

Tank looks awesome my friend!

This is what I have been trying to get at. I been using Reef crystals fro startup for past 5 months and think things look good. But a few people keep telling me I would be do better if I used salt X and I just cant buy into it . My numbers are good and things are stable.

I've been using Instant ocean as well i just don't like the residue it leaves every time i make a batch of salt. Hate that slime. I'm thinking of switching to Fritz blue box and hope it's not the same as Instant ocean. But i've had a lot of success with IO.

Slightly off topic - there used to be someone who posted daily pics of his SPS collection, and boasted that his only maintenance was water changes with Petco pre-mixed water. What ever happen to that guy? His tank was pretty impressive.

I've used Reef Crystals, Red Sea Coral Pro (old formula white bucket and newer version black bucket), Coralife and ESV. I can tell you if I still had the 55 gallon I would still be using the ESV, I just cant afford it with about 250 gallon system now, for 200 gallons of ESV it would be double what RC is.

Is that guy USED to be on BRS? If that is the case, I know who that is. By the way if that was the right person, he used the Petco pre-packaged water, which is the same as Catalina branded sea water. It works.
