I should know this by now. What is the best (not cheapest)way to increase alkalinity? thanks

Like Jim said...baking or washing soda. But be careful, if you add too much at once your ph will go through the roof. You need to add it slowly. I add it by a drip on a timer.

What effect does the baking soda have on the ph?

I know I use washing soda every once in a while, but I have to add it VERY slowly because it also causes the ph to go up.

Baking soda causes your PH to drop unless you bake it in the oven @ 300 deg for an hour then it will raise your PH
Washing sode I beleive will raise you PH but I do not think it is as pure as baking sode

Well, it causes your pH to go to around 8.0
If your pH is higher than that, it will drop to 8.
If your pH is lower, it'll raise the pH to 8.

Washing Soda will usually raise the pH a few points.
