Is there an estimated cost in parts for this? Looks to be under $20, given you have a soldering iron and wire stripper already.
 
What if I wanted to construct this such that ran off 1 plug? it would need some sort of ac/dc converter to feed the coil +12VDC.

Hmmm. Lemme see if I can draw something during lunch. (Also, it has been 10 years since my last electronics class. ha!)

in the box identified "AC to DC transformer" 2 things need to happen- 1) you need a transformer to convert 120VAC to 12VAC. 2) Next, the 12VAC goes though this circuit to convert the signal to DC:
