I was doing my round in ReffCentral and came across this DIY thread about LED light and wanted to see what do you guys think about it. I think it looks good and its working good too now looks at the thread and tell me what you guys think :: im thinking about doing one for my 65g to see how it works its not that expensive:.:.:.:D

While this might seem like a good idea I would highly suggest not doing it for a reef tank. For a FOWLR it would be fine or if you were to add this to an existing light setup that would be fine.

I've thought of putting on a few blue Xmas LED lights for the shimmer and more blue with my T5's but I def wouldn't do it as the only source of lights. Those LED's just aren't up to snuff with the LED's that are currently being used for reef tanks (3W Cree's and equivalent)

It seems so kool, would be awesome if it could really work. It seems a little to good to be true to actually be effective and im thinking the same thing as the post above me. The leds from the x-mas lights just don't seem to have the power needed.

Thats what i was geting at LOL i dont think they do eather but im going to try them out in a small tank maby a bio cube or a 20g long might work on a small tank what do you guys think

i think it will work for a small tank as long as your using those really bright christmas lights and alot of them

What is wrong with you people, this is crazy. JK ;) Intersting idea, probably enought for softies but not SPS. Also, the RC examples were tiny nanos, with your 65 you may not get the penetration needed. Did the RC posts list the PAR? I didn't see it. If you do it keep us posted looks cool. I've been thinking about adding a stand of the blues for my night light. I'm already running 3w LEDs as my main lights.

For the price, and if the corals can actually do well, it's not a bad idea over a tiny nano tank. But over a 65-gal, no way. Just look at how many were used over a 7-gal tank, 320 LEDs! Do you know how many strings of lights you'd need for a 65-gal. I'm not sure if the LED xmas lights are like the older style xmas lights, but remember what a pain it was when one would burn out and a whole string wouldn't light up? Good luck trying to find the culprit with that many bulbs.

jajajaja i know my mom use to make me fish the bad light out of the darn string of light jajajaj

if this doesnt work, dont use it to judge all leds people use for reefs, i probably wouldnt even equate them to PCs

It looks sharp but I'm not a fan of the wires from the christmas lights. They annoy me when I try to put them back in the box let alone cramming them into some eggcrate then hot glueing them in place... i think I would quit SW tanks forever lol
