How to protect your power equipment

What's the best way to protect your power equipment. Can anyone surge protector work , what do you recommend?

I have a whole panel surge system. Takes care of everything.

The best thing to do is have them outside of the cabinet. I've seen many builds with a separate area for all the power and just a small hole to run power cords through.

Or do you mean against a lightning surge or something like that? Then just a good computer surge protector will help

I am very limited to where I can put a surge protector. The only place for it to go would be in the stand. I'm just looking for a very good type of protector is Monster or Belkin okay or can I just go into a Lowe's or a Home Deopt . Ohhhh how about a battery back up and what should be plugged into it just a small powered or heater??
