Overflow box drain question

Hey y'all
Ive been running an overflow box for awhile now and I was wondering if anyone has a better suggestion for the bulkhead drain sponge filter.

So far I have just been cutting squares off pieces of fluval fx4/5/6 filter blocks to fit onto my drain.

I cant seem to find round filter sponges that aren't super expensive.

Picture attached is a square of sponge filter on the overflow bulkhead drain pipe.

What about a pvc strainer for the top to stop things like snails and a filter sock below in the sump? Otherwise I wonder if a replacement sponge for sponge style airstone filters would work.

I use the larger quilt stuffing, its a roll of it. I cut it to size, and replace it daily. In doing this, I removed my filter socks, because this does a better job.
