RODI storage barrel

I’m setting up an RODI system and I’m trying to decide what to use for a barrel. I’ve thought about just buying a rain barrel with the spigot already built in, however they are a little pricey. I’ve seen people use brute barrels and plumb in their own spigot. I’m interested in doing something like that, however I’m not sure the best way to plumb in the spigot to be confident that there won’t be any leaks. Any tips or tricks, suggestions???

Check craigslist for food grade barrels. I got a 55 from a guy the next city over that was like $20 or $25. A nice sawzall blade and some elbow grease, voila.

This worked for me. HomeDepot and got 2 Brute barrels. Got the bulkhead fittings from BRS.
Just sand down the exterior of the barrel at the location you chose. It will seal and hold water. You will have to experiment with how much to sand down the area. It will differ depending on the size of the barrel..

This is what mine looks like. Like Paul said I would look on Facebook marketplace for food grade 55 gallon drums with screw tops.

Bulkhead or uniseal. I used a bulkhead for the spigot on my RODI. Rectorseal on the threads - probably not needed. 90 degree 1/2” elbow fits perfectly inside of a 1 gallon water jug.

34 gal of RODI lasts around 1 1/2 to 2 weeks for 270 gal combined between tanks. I could use a larger RODI holding container, but initially I didn’t have so many tanks.

Suggestions - Adding a 3 way John Guest valve to in front of the DI housing to save on DI resin. Adding a pump to do the heavy lifting.

Parts
* 34 gal Brute garbage can
* Lifeguard Aquatics 1/2-Inch Slip Bulkhead fitting
* HYDROSEAL Kaplan 1/2" PVC True Union Ball Valve with Full Port, ASTM F1970, EPDM O-Rings and Reversible PTFE Seats, Rated at 200 PSI @73F, Gray, 1/2 inch Socket (1/2")
* Pipe
* 90 degree elbow
