The plan I'm more or less following is the first example on this helpful website http://www.reefaquarium.com/2013/building-aquarium-canopy/. Plan on using four pieces of 3"x4" pieces of 3/4" plywood for the "stilts" that will sit on the tank frame. These will be on the inside of the side and back panels and will be there instead of the frame as shown in the link . Also have to account for my HOB skimmer with a cutout from a side panel. My LED lights are par38 bulbs so the canopy will be taller than the examples in the link.

Initially I was planning on using old barn boards that I saw being stored in my grandmothers garage for the canopy. However once I got them down from the rafters and measured them, one board was 3/4 wider than the other.

This would be to much of a headache to deal with for my wood working skills so it was off to Home Depot.

Ended up getting a sheet of 3/4inch plywood and had it cut at the depot to four 16" sections. This will be the height of each panel. Me and my dad cut the length of each panel, as these cuts needed more accuracy than Home Depot could offer. Good thing we did cause the depots 16 inch cuts were all 1/4" short haha. The top section of the canopy was cut into one 8" wide panel and one 11 3/4" wide panel. The 8" will form the hinged lid which will be connected to the front panel.

Gonna keep chugging away at it and depending on how things go, am hoping to be done in the next week or two. Planning on staining it with a couple coats of this two in one stain/polyurethane that my dad has kicking around.

Will post updates as I progress.

Got a fair amount done this weekend, the canopy is almost assembled.

Just got to attach the hinges to the front piece and the top and it will be assembled. Other than that need to get some wood fill over the screw heads and spots where I botched it. Then it will be sanding and staining.

Got the top trim on last night. I sanded the corners down where the two pieces met with a small file and sand paper block. I was able to get a smooth finish and am pleased with how it came out.

The inside has three applied, hopefully that's enough coats for protection.

Fitted the vents to see how it's looking. Gonna do one more coat over the vent panel since it's a little streaky in areas.

Thanks s_kelley!

Last night I put on the hinges and encountered the first hiccup of the build.

The original plan was to have four hinges spread out across the seam but ended up going with just two. The top piece of the lid has a very slight warp to it. When I attached the two middle hinges this warp prevented the lid from opening fully and it stopped at about half way open.

Probably should of tested the hinges before staining but oh well haha. It should be an easy fix to fill the holes left from attaching the hinges and then dab stain over the fillings.

Will hopefully attaching the lights this weekend and will have it on the tank then.

Got the holes from the hinges patched and touched up and looking like before the botch job haha. Also decided to add a handle to the front of the lid for easier access.

I used the pvc light fixture that I made during another diy project (quick write up here:Tank update http://www.bostonreefers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=150002). It fit nice after a few adjustments to the wiring and length of the pvc light fixture. I attached it with 3 of the 3/4" pvc brackets found in the plumbing section. I then attached the actinic stunner strip I have with the stock bracket it came with.

All in all I'm very pleased with the results. Everything fit tight and the tank looks much better now that the lighting is hid. The canopy is a little tall but I can live with that since I need the space for the lights.
