i think i was using an inferior quality carbon.. i was looking at the bulk reef supply carbon and it says to start with 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons
as for the price of the setup.. if the housing are 18.50 x2 would equal 37.00 but you still need the refill cartridges which are 8.00 each (then you have to mod them i believe).. so for 43.00 bucks without shipping you could make your own.. minus the fittings and the hoses.. you are probably going to save about 5 bucks or so ..
