Do all filter pads/floss raise Nitrates?

A friend has a 54 setup we were talking about today. He mentioned he still had the floss and foam pads in his Eheim. I suggested removing them as a way to help lower the Nitrates. I told him to fill the chambers with rubble instead. Is there any one type of foam pad or floss that won't raise the Nitrates?

Anything that can trap detritis / curd will potentially cause nitrate issues. If you cleaned it everyday it would be OK, but otherwise better off without any floss exct..

If anything, Maybe a filter sock on the overflow drain but you'd still have to wash it constantly - this would just be easier than taking apart a filter everyday.

He hasn't made the leap to a sump just yet. Still canister filters only. I'm pushing him in that direction though.

I figured, just keep telling him to toss the floss. If he doesn't listen, just stop by and steal it :)
