Has anyone heard about this? - Reefing in danger of becaming ilegal?!

So what kind of corals would be legal if the law passed?

Dong, we will be coming to your basement (and a few other's here in the club) to get our fix. You will become one of our coral "Speak Easies". A place to go and get new additions for our soon to be illegal Hobby! :p

So..um.why does RC close threads like this?
It wasn't political?

I opened that thread, and was warned less than then 10 minutes later they were probably going to close it...

No, you can keep whatever you already have in your tank but you can't BUY any new SPS and some LPS.
If I give you a free frag of SPS that I have in my tank is OK.
So the solution is massively culture SPS and some LPS within the club so people can give free frags to each other (not at the same time I guess).
But expect to see all the vendors only carry leather and zoas.
I think fish will be the next target of NOAA...So all the tanks will look kinda boring.

I got an email about this from AI last night. Hadn't heard anything about it until then... I believe these regulations were proposed a while back but they were submitted on April 3rd this year. Hopefully we get enough people to go to the link and speak their minds about it...

It was reported on ReefBuilder's back in November:

http://reefbuilders.com/2012/11/30/...66-stony-coral-species-endangered-threatened/

And is a measure that comes as a follow-up to a previously defeated measure a few years ago to ban even more corals. The original comment period was extended, and it is quite sad to me that only now is that extension getting attention. You can read more about it here: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/stories/2012/11/82corals.html and here: http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2012/20121130_coralspecies.html It has also been talked about in Coral Magazine, Reef2Rainforest, and ReefBuilders (among others I'm sure). This is a good reason to follow the free online reefing magazines - they often have stories on important topics such as this.

Beyond that, there is a separate proposal that seeks to ban the collection of common fish including the blue-green chromis and percula clownfish. That was filed last September, and you can read about it here: http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2012/reef-fish-09-13-2012.html and here: http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/...fs/Clownfish-and-damselfish-petition-2012.pdf

Anyhow, neither of these are new, they are only just now getting major attention on forums.

The hobby will be still legal but all the commercial sources of SPS and some LPS will be gone.
I will develop a 6 step program for SPS addicts to shake their addiction.
First step is to admit that SPS are cool and you are an addict of them.
Second step is to realize that you can't buy them anywhere
Third step is to go to public aquarium in order to look at SPS
Forth step is to learn how to appreciate Kenya tree
Fifth is to train your tangs to host anemone (by then Nemo will be illegal too)
The last step is buy coral skeleton and color them up with spray paint then put them in your tank...look at that red dragon... spray paint from HD.

According to this guy, you will be able to trade corals. Just legaly not for currency anymore... We are joking about this, but if this passes it's REALLY BAD... :(

Actually this is not the consensus of those knowledgable in the field, and I have not read anything suggesting that already owned or aquacultured versions will be permitted. If anything, I've read the opposite, and that one of the criticisms of the proposal is that it fails to allow for aqua and maricultured species. http://www.reef2rainforest.com/2013/04/04/commentary-noaas-20122013-66-coral-esa-proposal/

Better late than never I guess... I Hope...

The major issue is for importantion which it is impossible to ID large amount of corals coming in everday.
But for home aquarium, it is possible to find out if any of the corals in your tank is endangered.
12 of the petitioned coral species warrant listing as endangered (five Caribbean and seven Indo-Pacific), 54 coral species warrant listing as threatened (two Caribbean and 52 Indo-Pacific), and 16 coral species (all Indo-Pacific) do not warrant listing as threatened or endangered under the ESA
There are 12 endangered species and these 12 are not that common in reef tanks.

The impact for importers and retailers is very large because they can't import most of the corals since a blanket ban of SPS and LPS would be expected.

Pretty soon corals will be selling as much as Drugs do!

What?!? I don't know where you buy your drugs, but I've seen corals already that cost more than my fixes. ;)

Please note: I'm kidding of course... my 'fixes' consist of junk food and caffeine-free soda only. I'm boring like that.

Do you hear that NY is limiting your fix? You can't buy a large soda in NY, but you still can refill...

Very soon Aptasia and Majono will be the stars of this hobby in addition to Kenya tree and spooky paly.

Although un arguably are hobby does have an impact on our reefs it is in no way on the top of the list for what is killing the oceans.
