Would this be absolute overkill and not function effectivley for a new setup with 55gal of volume? Once it reaches a mid-high level bioload that is.

I don't think it would be overkill. I used it with my Red Sea Reefer 250 (54 gal DT + 11 gal sump). It worked really well with that system. I probably had a medium-heavy bioload.
