Tuning EuroReef RC250 advice needed.

I have a Euro-Reef RC 250 External skimmer, it came with an air valve to control air flow. When I have the air valve wide open the bubbles are a little bigger in size and there is high turbulence inside the skimmer which causes a sucking action pulling water downwards as it rises up. This is opposed to when I close the air valve like ½ way or a little more the bubbles are much finer and turbulence is less without the sucking action pulling water downwards.

The skimmer is broken in and been running fine for over 8 months and I have been skimming good with the air valve wide open however, I feel that there is a lot more to be skimmed and with some tuning I can get better skimming and I am confused as to how to.

Why when there is more air going in bubbles are bigger I thought the more air the better.

Any advice?
