I.D. The good, the bad & the ugly!

With so many living creatures in a reef how do you tell the good from the bad? Are there any informative sites out there or maybe a past BRS threads that will help with this question? As a newer reef hobbyist my downfall is not being able to spot a predator or pest when a purchase is made due to lack of knowledge. Just looking to educate myself in this area to avoid future problems.
