Very good advice don't use them as a external pump, that said I had one on my Ca reactor without a problem other than the noise.

don't use models larger than 7 either IME.. they get really noisy and can have harsh vibrations.

I have a mag 9, 12 and 24.

Very reliable, never had an issue with one but also very noisy and the 24 did leak. The 12 ran my skimmer and the 24 ran my return from the basement.

Aside from the heat and noise they are good pumps.

I have a bunch, they can get noisy but never tried as external....
