Refugium question

So I had sectioned off a compartment in my sump for use as a refugium, I was tryng to position my return pump it popped off the suction cups whackes the baffle and broke the silicone seal so i chose to remove it. my question is can i still throw a light down there to encourage algae growth without separating the return chamber from the refugium section or would that be a bad idea? Is there a quick fix as opposed to draining the sump reinstalling baffle etc etc etc?

Depends on what you are going to keep in the fug.
I find that if chaeto is growing in there it tends to get into the pump and eventually back into the display as well.

Maybe you can put egg crate in there as a barrier, held up with a rock or something.
