Recent conversations on running GAC has me wondering.... I run a dual BRS media reactor designed for GFO and GAC. Since my phosphates test ok .02-.07 with BIOPELLET running I eliminated GFO several months ago. Therefore I've got one chamber with GAC (I run ROX 0.8) running 100% changed out monthly. The second chamber is empty. Not sure of exact flow rate but it's low/low enough for a slight tumble of GFO if it were in there. In the empty chamber I get sponge growth.
So question is what is happening in this second low flow/no media chamber? Bacterial propagation? Might this be considered a benthic zone if it is no media just some minor sponge growth?
Thanks for the thoughts
