Using sprinker values

I'm in the planning stage of a Reef Tank. 55 gal main tank with 20 gal sump. One of the things I've been thinking about is the automation of maintenance beyond the level of a Aqua controller. Specifically being able to control valves. So I'm looking for PVC solenoid valves. I have found some at places like McMaster-Carr, Cole-Parmer, and Assured Automation. Their valves tend to start @ $100 and go up from there.

As I thought about it further, why couldn't I use a sprinkler values like. http://www.irritrol.com/valves/valves_2400s.html.

The valves are normally closed. activated by 24v, 1" threaded or slip connectors, UV-resistant PVC, stainless steel components and has adjustable flow control. So for $20, what am I missing.

"Irritrol® Systems’ popular 205 Series electric globe valves offer debris-tolerant operation and a high-flow, low-friction-loss design for optimum performance in potable and dirty water applications."

Thoughts.

I suspect these valves have springs, which will rot and pollute your tank.
Reef guys end up using motorized ball valves which cost $$$.

Valves

Even the highest quality stainless steel can rouge and create a surface for a lot of nasty growth. Especially with the salt levels being used in these reef tanks... its just not a good idea.

I have opened up a few of these valves over the years, (we have a sprinkler in the yard) and I have never seen on that did not have brass or stainless. Stainless does not mean rustproof just resistant. For our tanks you end up using ultra-pure valves (no metal).

Thanks for all the feedback. I decided to dig further into the McMaster-Carr and found a reasonably prices solenoid valves.

Its a 3/8 food grade valve for $50. I'll post to let people know how it works out.
