best way to store water

I was wondering what the best way to store water is. obviously would like to cut cost as much as possible but what ever advice to keep the water in good conditions would be great.

I used to store water in empty milk jugs or 3 gal bottled water containers.
I now use a 55 gal plastic drum that I got for $25.00. The drums are used to ship food and can be purchased used.
I tried a rubbermade brute 45 gal ( ?) container but it started leaking after a few months.

I think im going to try to use a slim jim rubbermade 35 gal barrel im kinda short on space but my take like evaporates like 5 gal every 3 days lol its a big pain to be topping off like every other day the prob I have with the slim jim is it doesn't have a full lid they all are like recycling lids

I use 5g springwater bottles. I have used rubbermaid drums w/ no problems
