MrX's Build (Started 03/01/2020)

Received my Frozen Food Thawer/Feeder today from @Frag Freaks

Was a little worried that it wouldn't work with my euro-braced tank and that the magnet would be under-powered on the 3/4" thick glass.

Neither turned out to be a problem.

The fish so far tend to hang out in the front left or right corners, so I put it right in the middle (on the front). It doesn't obstruct the view at all; it almost just blends in with the overflow/back of the tank.

I tossed in a frozen mysis cube and watched it for about 5 seconds before getting distracted by a work meeting. I didn't get to see any of the feeding activity! *sigh*

I'll have to make up some fish goo this weekend and freeze my own cubes with the new trays. Then I can try again when I have more time to watch.

SonX and I made our first batch of fish goo today.

Bought a new Oster blender; I'm not impressed with it at all. Most of the stuff at the bottom doesn't get mixed at all. Real pain in the arse.

This "goo" includes:

- fresh scallops
- quahog clam
- crab meat
- shrimp
- freeze-dried cyclops
- APBreed TDO Chroma Boost (small pellets)
- Hikari Seaweed Extreme (sinking pellets)
- freeze-dried blood worms
- New Life Spectrum Thera+A pellets
- Sally's Frozen Brine Shrimp (break off a piece about the size of a cube)
- PE Calanus (Copepod zooplankton)
- Frozen Mysis Shrimp
- Frozen Fish eggs
- Frozen Bloodworms
- Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies - Purple Seaweed
- Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies - Green Seaweed (also have Petco green, forget what brand)
- Petco Red Seaweed (forget what brand, same as the Petco green)

This stuff stinks to high heaven. I wanted to vomit just doing this. I don't know how Anthony eats this crap. Never mind how he convinces other people to try it.

Filled the two trays I bought (gives me 252 cubes) and had a little left over that I threw in a ziplock bag. If anyone reading this wants the leftover let me know (pick up in Charlton), otherwise I'll use it later.

Here's some pics.

Fish goo seems to be a big hit in the tank!

Three times a day I pop one of the cubes into the @Frag Freaks thawer and let it do it's thing. The minute the fish see me pop it in, or sense/smell the food, they all start gathering around the feeder. (Good time to watch them all!)

Not sure they like it as much as me just squirting in a bunch of food at once. They have to be a little more patient now.

Might only do two cubes a day and squirt a little of my normal mixture in for the third feeding.

Only other update is that I purchased a new light for the sump. Someone here on BRS had mentioned an Acke 12W light from Amazon, so I ordered one:

It's a LOT brighter than the little clip-on that was in there previously. Now to see how it helps the chaeto/macro grow.

Haha I’ve had my six line jump into the top of my feeder during feeding time. And my clowns love going up inside it like that.

The Anthias have figured out they can sometimes grab some up at the teeth. No one has tried going over the top yet though; well, except for the damned Cerith snails... they are always headed towards the feeder.

Broke off/pulled out 2-3 frags last night with Aptasia, and took out the rock in the front with Zoas that had a couple balls of bubble algae.

The frags I broke off I dismantled from the frag plugs they came on. Aptasia-X didn't seem to be working and I was tired of dealing with them. Figure if I can get rid of the things they are hiding on maybe I'll get rid of them.

Dipped/rinsed them all off in RODI as I was doing this.

I really p#ssed the corals off though. I was worried I was going to kill them.

Before and after shots of a couple of them.

Before -- These Zoas were growing over a frag disc with a piece of egg crate. There were at least two Aptasia that I could see hidden between them.

After -- Pull off as many of the polyps as I could and super-glued them to a piece of rubble. The polyps on the right-hand side came off in one "string", so I ran a bead of glue along that edge of the rubble and put them there. Most of the polyps are starting to open now, so I guess I didn't mess it up too badly.

Before -- Aptasia kept popping up on the base/frag plug of this frag, so again, got rid of as much of it as I could. Glued the polyps to another piece of rubble.

After -- A couple of the polyps are opening... I know I killed one or two moving this. Couldn't get rid of all of the plug it was mounted on.

Before -- This was from earlier this week. Hydroids.
IMG_20200619_203215.jpg

After -- I broke the coral off the frag plug and glued it to a piece of rubble. This is 2-3 days after removing it. No sign of the hydroids (yeah!)

I cleaned up my Kryptonite Candycane last night as well. Doesn't look too good this morning. At this point I'm guessing it's not going to survive. :(

The frogspawn I did seems to be ok.

Guess time will tell.

lucky you

Nine days ago, on June 21, 2020, I posted about cleaning up some corals that had aptasia/etc. One of the corals I tried to clean up was a Kyptonite Candycane.

I think I overdid it and the next morning it looked awful. Brown crap coming off it, lots of skeleton, etc. I thought it was a goner.

There was a little bit of green left in the "mouth" areas, so I moved it to a lower flow section of the tank.

Happily today I can say that I think it will make a full recovery. The puffy "heads" are starting to come back and it's beginning to color back up.

Woot!

Morning of June 22 (after the cleaning attempt)
