While on my drive to the day job, I got hit by an interesting idea / theory.

I'm going to try to do an experiment on my theory, but just curious -- how many of us use moon lights? (this is obviously moon light related theory :) )

Also I know it's going to be hard for most of us, but would you guys be willing to share some night time pics along with your how long you have had your tank setup?

We will draw a raffle at the end of this month for $50 gift certificate valid on livestock -- everyone who participates in this thread will get an entry (please post in this thread if you vote because there's no way for me to know who all voted).

Some of the questions I'd like to get answers about:
1) How old is the tank?
2) How long / often do you use the moon lights, if at all?
3) What is the temperature / temperature swing in your tank?
4) Do you see a healthy rotifers/pod population in your tank?
5) Do you spot feed your corals?
6) Do you feed your fish/tank heavily?
7) What are your phosphate + nitrate levels at?

Thanks,

- Archit

*** Entries for the raffle ***
- Your vote counts for 1 entry (please make a post in this thread after you vote so I know whom to enter in the raffle :) )
- If you post answers to the above questions, you'll get 3 entries
- If you post night time pictures you'll get 4 entries

To clarify: Max of 8 entries possible if you do all 3 :)

*** Information Re-Use Disclaimer ***
- Any info you provide on this thread might be used for example, or aggregate purposes for the article that'll be a result of our experiment ... if we get to that stage :)

Yes my Pacific Sun has a moon phase setting that I use. Pic to follow. Tank has been set up for a 13 months.

How many of us use moon lights?

I had a lunar simulator with moon LEDs for my apex. I just a sold it because I'm getting the new pacific suns from you so right now no moonlights. When I get the new fixture from you I assume there is a lunar mode? Tank has been set up for 11 months

The Apollo Reef leds I had over my 120G each had 2 blue leds for moonlights. I used them from 11pm or so until 3-4am each night (after the main lights dimmed down). I used (for a very short time as you well know) the moon-phase on my PacSun Triton over my frag tank.

On my 40B, second time around, I used the blue leds at very low setting on my Reef Breeders Photon24 to simulate moonlights.

Pictures should still be in my build thread; I'll see if I can find/repost a couple of them.

Thanks guys -- I just edited the first post looking for some more info pertinent to my experiment / curiosity :)

Updating to clarify that I voted, and to answer the new questions:

1) How old is the tank?
Tank was about 12 months old.

2) How long / often do you use the moon lights, if at all?
The moonlights were on from approximately 11pm-4am.

3) What is the temperature / temperature swing in your tank?
If I recall the temp went up or down 0.5 degrees throughout the day. Moonlights on/off didn't make any difference.

4) Do you see a healthy rotifers/pod population in your tank?
Healthy/normal population in the DT and sump.

5) Do you spot feed your corals?
Once in a while; didn't make a habit of it.

6) Do you feed your fish/tank heavily?
Early on I was feeding twice a day, probably more than I should have. I cut it back and for 8 months or so fed once a day.

7) What are your phosphate + nitrate levels at?
Not sure about phosphate. Last nitrate level I recall was 5-10. (Did monthly water changes of about 50-55G).

Will look for some of my night pics tonight.

Can you clarify if the questions/pictures give you additional entries, or that would be total entries? (Just curious).

I'll update the first post with this info.

Thanks again!

No Moonlights, but I will be installing some on my new tank. I have always liked looking at fish tanks with moonlights on and I miss that. Sorry no good tank parameters as it is basically in a holding patern (IE life support) until I get the new set up running...

1) How old is the tank?
A little over a year.

2) How long / often do you use the moon lights, if at all?
About a month since switching from halides to my current LED fixture.

3) What is the temperature / temperature swing in your tank?
Winter time it varies from 77-78.

4) Do you see a healthy rotifers/pod population in your tank?
I frequently see pods crawling around at night. During the day my fish pick them off when they are seen.

5) Do you spot feed your corals?
About once a week I spot feed my acans, dendros, and sun corals. I do see them grabbing flake and pellets too though.

6) Do you feed your fish/tank heavily?
I feed once a day. I only have four fish so I do not need to feed much.

7) What are your phosphate + nitrate levels at?
I havent tested in quite a while but they were barely detectable on my tests when I did though.

Night time pic from tonight,
