It has started

With enough notice, me too in Hudson. My only charge will be a running reef commentary, and having to listen the the bazillion new-to-reef questions....

Moe, congrats on making some progress. :)

A durso is very easy to make. You don't glue anything. Have you been to www.dursostandpipes.com yet? Take a look at the image, and just assemble it accordingly.

You'll need 1 tee, 1 elbow, 1 cap, and one threaded-to-slip fitting, and a length of PVC pipe. It really only costs about $5 or less to make one, and doesn't take long at all. Drilling the hole in the cap is important.

You must have subscribed to this thread, eh Marc? :) Took me a few minutes to figure out how/why you returned.
I'll check out the link, thanks.

I'd like to get down your way this September for MACNA, but given the wife will be in her 9th month, I doubt I'll be able to swing the trip. I woulda like to hoist a couple of cold ones with you guys.

Yep, I subscribed to your thread long ago. And no matter how long you drag this out, I'm here for the duration.

If you do come to MACNA, I'd be happy to put a few ales out of their misery. ;) However if you don't make it, more for me. :D

If you need help finishing up the plunbing for the durso's and return lines, let me know and I could stop by during the week sometime after work.

Wow, just finished reading the entire thread....just kidding. I am very glad that I have returned to the forum to see this one thru to the end.

RW, kinda optimistic aren't we? ;)

People of the Durso: lend me advice!

So, I'm trying to set up my Durso standpipes.
Got a question for you...

In Rich Durso's diagram, there's a long section of 1.25" PVC pipe that he labeled #6. How long should that run of 1.25" pipe be in a 125 gallon standard AGA tank?

I thank you in advance.

Moe, in my tank it is 15 3/4" from the glass on the bottom of the tank to the bottom of the T that that pipe attaches to. I believe the standpipe goes 1" into the T so that would be 16 3/4". I know you have one slip and one threaded so you will need to figure out the length depending on what you do on the other end but the overall height should be what I listed. That will give you enough room with the cap on the T to cover the overflow if you want.

The way I set mine up is to assemble the top section (T, cap on top, elbow to strainer), then cut the tube in question so the top of the cap will be just below the max water line in the overflow box (1/2" below the water level in the display outside the overflow box). Cut it a little on the long side, test fit, then cut down if needed.

Don't cement any of the parts (now or later) and don't push the slip fittings together too tight - cleaning is much easier if the parts come apart easily and minute leakage won't casue any problems.

I figured I'd cut it on the long side, but I'm dealing with a 10 foot pipe, so I was looking for a ballpark figure on how tall the main riser pipe should be. :p

Strainer? Where do you use a strainer? I'm guessing on the intake of the street elbow?

Thanks Mike. That gives me a ballpark. :)

Moe, do you have the link for the diagram your looking at?

One way or another you always want to have a strainer on the inlet to the duroso because there will always be a snail or something that WILL get into the overflow.

that's exactly what I was picturing. The strainer goes on the open end of #8

AGA sells them all set up and adjustable for $20 a pair. WELL worth not having to screw with making one yourself.:) I got mine from Marc when Fishey Business was still open.
