    Chromis spawning

I just noticed my chromis spawning. Anyone know what goes on with them? There seems to be one dominant fish (maybe third largest out of 11) and he (I think I'm identifying the naughty bits correctly) will swim over the rock like a spawning clown would an will then go get one of the other...

    Overnight mystery tank disaster

I'm so sad this morning. I woke up to a mystery disaster. I have a 42g hex tank plumbed into my large system. This morning one large clown and all four filefish were dead. Survivers are one smaller clown and two cardinal fish. The only tank change is that the siphon is broken between the...

Is there copper in a razor blade?

Dropped one way behind the rocks and it won't be easy to get. I thought I remembered someone figuring out that they pose no hazard to the tank as they rust and maybe add beneficial iron, but wanted to double check. I know I can go fishing with a magnet, but it still will be a trick to get out.

Orange Spotted AKA Harlaquin Filefish (Oxymonacanthus longirostris)

Thought I would start a thread on these guys. I have two now and am looking for a female. Matt Pedersen has been breeding these fish. The thread is very long (34 pages at this time) but so well done documenting his work with these fish starting with "rescuing" a few from the LFS...

What flake or pellet food do you like?

We recently got a new fish that is mostly eating flake over frozen. I normally don't feed much flake since I have several fish who need lots of frozen food so I'm out of date on what is the best stuff out there. The fish is eating formula one flake right now, but it is an old can and I need to...

    Breeding cardinalfish resources and questions

Hi everyone, my daughter wants to try her hand at breeding fishes. Rather than start with our pink skunks or mandarins I opted to get her a couple of bangai's. They are still really small, but apparently we lucked out and have a male female pair because surprise, the male is holding eggs...

    Where to find prices

I have some used equipment to sell and have not been pricing out stuff for myself in a while. Where do you guys go to find what would be a good price to ask for used equipment. I don't want to rip people off, but I don't want to give it away either.

    Fin rot after power outage?

With the power outage and UPS failure we had a several hour O2 deprivation long enough that I lost two fish and all of the others were laying on the bottom until I got the bubbler going. Temp also got down to 69 or so. After that we were on generator for 7 days, but running everything pretty...

    Sea Biscut developement video

It is amazing to think that stuff like this is going on under our noses in our tanks. Here is a beautiful closeup vid of the development process of a sea biscut. http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/11/the_heartbreaking_beauty_of_de.php I have looked at anemone nematocysts and some other...

Quick Q - rabbit fish and nets

Can I use a net on a rabbitfish or will the spines get stuck? Somehow my rabbit got into the overflow (No idea how that could have happened) and I need to get him out. Can anyone think of something else to use (remembering that they are poisinous) . I uaually use a gloved hand to get a fish...

New Eel- am I feeding enough?

Hi guys, I got an eel recently for my daughter's tank and am not sure if I am feeding it enough. Everything I read reinforces that it should be only fed once, at most twice a week. In other Moray owner's experience is this enough? I'm doing one piece of shrimp about the size of his head...

Pink skunk clown eggs for the taking

Anyone interested in hatching some pink skunks? They laid their eggs on a clay pot this time and I can get them out easily. The pair lay every 12.5 days, but normally they do it on the same rock the anemone is anchored to. It was a good looking, very large batch this time and they were all...

Gigantea, magnifica and other difficult anemones

So lets hear about some advanced anemone keeping. I know a few of us in the club have taken on some of the large rarer and delicate host anemones like the S. gigantea or the H. magnifica. Paul (reefkeeper2) Has one of the most beautiful, healthy giganteas in captivity that I know of...

Walmart has fish traps - $10

This might be old news, but it was new to me. In the Walmart fishing section they have a "Catch n' See Live Trap". It looks like a great fish trap for small fish. the opening to the trap is about one inch round, so it would only work with smaller guys like wrasses and smaller clowns. For $10...

    Crab ID

I don't know where the heck this guy came from except maybe as a hitchhiker on rock I bought years ago. I haven't bought live rock or any mounted corals in ages. He must have grown up in the tank. I noticed him because he had been breaking off pieces of digita and barricading himself in...
